在上世紀90年代中后期，鏡湖的水體呈高富營養(yǎng)化狀態(tài)，水質(zhì)嚴重惡化，水變成了黃色。惡化的原因主要有：蕪湖市某醫(yī)院通過地下水道將大量未經(jīng)處理的污物、污水直接排進了鏡湖；部分素質(zhì)不高的市民往鏡湖里倒垃圾；最可氣的是鏡湖風景區(qū)的某些工作人員竟然在鏡湖里洗拖把！慢慢地，鏡湖水變成了黃色，湖面上漂浮著許多垃圾，還散發(fā)著一股臭味。來到鏡湖邊的人們都捂著鼻子跑開了，嘴里還不停地說：“真臭！臭死了！”
一九九九年DDD二０００年，蕪湖市人民政府號召全市人民清理鏡湖。首先，工作人員用機器將湖水抽干，再由黨員帶頭和市民們一起挖掉淤泥，最后注入清澈的水。我外公是黨員，他有著親身體驗，外公說，那次勞動很累，但改善了鏡湖的水質(zhì)，大伙兒都感到很高興。
